A direct method for obtaining the large time asymptotic behavior of solutions of exterior wave problems will be discussed. This method can be regarded as an alternative one to the Lax-Phillips scattering theory. It allows to consider general hyperbolic equations and systems and the case when the obstacle or medium depend periodically on time.
