The Fast Multipole Algorithm evaluates mutual Coulombic interactions of N charged particles in O(N log N) operations. It has become a fundamental tool in a number of diverse areas, including circuit simulation, computational chemistry and astrophysics. This talk presents the underlying mathematical ideas and describes a basic version of the algorithm.
